Everyone waits for the meta gala every year; it’s an opportunity for designers to showcase their creativity and talent with the goal of smashing the theme while not being too predictable. It’s a moment that critics, fashion enthusiasts and just your average Joe wait for so we can all sit and judge when, in reality, we all wish we were dressed in couture, walking on the red carpet, being adored by the cameras and so on.
So you can imagine why we’ve summoned you here today and of course, it’s to discuss all of the Met Gala looks, both the good and the odd.
Cardi B in Giambattista Valli
If there is something that Cardi B brings to every Met Gala, it’s a dress that is over the top and extravagant, and you could say it’s exactly like her career. She was draped in a black gown that took at least 4 people to showcase the train which was iconic. While being over the top and beautiful, it wasn’t very on-brand for the theme, or maybe I just didn’t see it. Garden of Time screams bright colours and never black to me; it was giving maybe a black lagoon vibe but nonetheless, it was stunning.
Lana Del Ray in Alexander McQueen
Mother, also known as Lana Del Ray, was in a custom-made gown from McQueen and it has to be the best dress we’ve seen her in all year and brings us back to her ‘Born to Die’ era, which we’ve been missing. It was also very on-brand to them; she was dressed in the gorgeous nude colour with brown tree-like formations on the dress all the way past her hair, leaving a veil over the whole piece, which was incredible and a chef’s kiss.
Doja Cat In Vetements
We have seen this build-up coming from Doja Cat. After she was spotted wearing cellophane, plastic bags and a bed sheet prior to the famous Mark Hotel, it was no surprise that the quirky Doja Cat was wearing nothing but a wet T-shirt dress by Vetements with Pat McGrath makeup and tears running down her face. I will see that it’s a very refreshing perception of the theme. When you think of the Garden of Time, you can’t forget the rain and waterfalls so I really appreciated this look.
Zendaya In Maison Margiela
The style icon and talented actress Zendaya didn’t just come with one look but three. The first look was my personal favourite and was truly gobsmacked; it was a whole black glow off the shoulder but the star of the show was the headpiece; she was turned into a bouquet of flowers, extremely couture but very campy, which I adored to see. The second was very into the woods, which had a vibe but the make was on point and the headpiece again just brought the story together. The last and final look was a low-cut V-neck dress that was embellished and very pretty.
Tyal in Balmain
The singer, who has recently gone viral for her single 'Water', has everyone in absolute awe on the red carpet for the Met Gala. She came in a dress tailored to perfection and had members of staff carry her up the stairs. It was this gorgeous structure and the details, from the sand dripping on her arm to the hourglass-shaped handbag, really paid homage to the sandman’s wife, if he had one.
J. Harrison Ghee in Howie B
Hearing who understood the assignment, you cannot miss this structure masterpiece that J. Harrison strutted down the runway wearing. The hair piece was crafted to look like some sort of dragonfly as we worked our way down; it was in a cotton candy-coloured dress with a bow on the back to mimic wings. This is a maximalist camp dream; it’s not for everyone and that’s what I liked the most about this look. It was bold, creative and different from what we have seen on the runway. Plus, you can’t say it wasn’t on theme.
Amelia Gray in Undercover
The very successful supermodel Amelia gave us such a creative look that I was left staring at it for at least 5 minutes trying to figure it out, which I love to see come down the runway. To add that little bit extra, it was a glow-in-the-dark dress that mimicked a vase or greenhouse of flowers in this gorgeous, happy yellow colour. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was Beauty in the Beast Rose in the Glass, embodying the whole theme perfectly while looking stunning as always.
Final Thoughts
So this concludes my take on the weird, the wonderful and my personal highlights from the Met Gala 2024. I would have loved to see more celebrities take that risk at next year's Met. We definitely saw a lot of black again this year, which I thought was such a cop-out for this year's theme; it literally screams colour. Nonetheless, I loved what I saw from many artists, and I cannot wait to see what everyone comes up with next year, whether it’s an appreciation of abayas, a colour or out of a box theme.
